Armourer

  • Responsible for weapons systems: machine guns, cannons, bomb racks, and gun mounts.
  • Checked, serviced, and reinstalled guns, ammo feeds, and ordnance equipment.
  • Safely disposed of UXO or unsafe bomb loads in damaged aircraft.

Cook

  • Trained at RAAF technical schools, such as No. 1 and No. 4 Schools of Technical Training.
  • Responsible for preparing meals under challenging field conditions.
  • Training encompassed nutrition, food safety, and large-scale meal preparation.

DMT (Driver Motor Transport)

  • Operated trucks, cranes, and recovery vehicles used to reach and tow crashed aircraft.
  • Often first on scene for a salvage job, clearing wrecks under fire or in jungle terrain.
  • Maintained RSU vehicles in rough conditions.

Electrical Fitter

  • Repaired internal aircraft wiring: radios, magnetos, lighting, and starter systems.
  • Maintained batteries and ensured electrical safety before systems were reconnected.

Equipment Assistant

  • Managed parts, tools, and spares inventory.
  • Issued components and kept track of what parts were salvaged, usable, or needed reordering.
  • Crucial for avoiding supply delays in field conditions.

F/DMT (Fitter Driver Motor Transport)

  • Hybrid mechanic-driver who repaired and drove recovery vehicles.
  • Repaired winches, engines, and running gear on trucks and cranes.

Fitter IIA (Airframe Fitter)

  • Responsible for airframe structures, fuselage, and control surfaces.
  • Worked on flaps, undercarriage, hydraulics etc

Fitter IIE (Engine Fitter)

  • Maintained and rebuilt engines.
  • Repaired or swapped out magnetos, pumps, or cylinders.
  • Could reassemble entire powerplants salvaged from wrecks.

Instrument Repairer

  • Handled aircraft cockpit instruments — altimeters, turn-and-bank indicators, compasses, etc.
  • Calibrated and repaired gauges affected by crash shock, moisture, or heat.
  • Worked closely with electricians and airframe crews.

Medical Orderlies

  • Provided first aid for crew injured during field recoveries.

Mess Stewards

  • Managed dining facilities, served meals, and maintained cleanliness in mess areas.
  • Assigned to officers’ and sergeants’ messes across various RAAF units.

Motor Cyclists

  • Also known as despatch riders; delivered urgent messages, orders, and small equipment parts.
  • Transported critical documents and small components essential for aircraft repairs.
